Ashley Norton, Campbell Medicine, WakeMed, Raleigh

How did you find out about this experience?

I discovered this experience through networking with individuals within the WakeMed Health and Hospitals organization, Linkedin, and Job Fairs.

How has your time at Campbell prepared you for this experience?

Throughout my time at Campbell, I have taken various courses that prepared me for this experience. Putting those courses into a real-world perspective provided me with a different understanding of a Hospital at an operational level.

What did you learn from your internship?

My internship allowed me to meet, learn, and shadow various individuals who are on the management side of healthcare. For example, I was connected with a practice manager who provided me with insight into her day-to-day operations. She showed me various sides of operations from physician relations, and productivity, to budgets.

How did you grow during this experience?

Throughout this experience, I grew my professional and personal skills. For example, I covered 43 areas within WakeMed Health and Hospitals organization which allowed me to find areas where I could potentially pursue a career upon graduation. I have always had a doubt that I should be taking a clinical route, but after shadowing a few clinical levels from an operational standpoint I quickly realized that was not for me.

If students were to pursue a similar opportunity, what advice would you give them?

I would tell students to not be afraid to sign up and show up for these clinics. The clinic needs help from everyone from taking vitals to interpreting for patients. There is also room for you to shadow if you would like to do that! Get your foot in door and I promise you will not regret it! There is medical students, physician assistant students, pharmacy students, and amazing providers/attendings that will answer all your questions and doubts!

In what other ways are you involved at Campbell?

While at Campbell, I am involved in the Camel Ducks Unlimited Chapter and Student Accounting Society where I hold two leadership positions. Within the Ducks Unlimited Chapter, I hold the position of Sponsorship Coordinator. This allows me to connect with local businesses and individuals for donations to our chapter. Within the Student Accounting Society, I currently hold the position of Vice President where I connect with other students on campus and assist the president in operations to ensure we are meeting our goals.
