Graphic design graduate’s poster included in Creative Quarterly magazine
A poster created by recent Campbell University graphic design graduate Abigail Ellington was selected for a recent issue of Creative Quarterly, an internationally recognized graphic design and illustration magazine based in New York City.
Laika, The First Living Creature to Orbit The Earth, is a commemorative poster Ellington created for her ART 441 Independent Study in Graphic Design course last spring. Laika was sent into orbit by the Soviet Union on Nov. 3, 1957, inside Sputnik 2, paving the way for the first human in space, Yuri Gagarin, four years later.
Ellington researched both Soviet and American posters from the era and Russian space-age typography. She said her portrayal of Laika “strikes bravery, sympathy and adoration.”
Ellington’s work was included with students from universities such as the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York City; Parsons School of Design, New York City; School of Visual Arts, New York City; Syracuse University; State University of New York; University of the Arts, Philadelphia; Moore College of Art & Design, Philadelphia; Kutztown University of Pennsylvania; Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore; Savannah College of Art & Design, Savannah; Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; Texas Christian University; East Texas A&M University; Academy of Art University, San Francisco; OCAD University, Toronto; and Kingston University, London.
Last spring, Ellington received an invitation to visit the Hellenic Republic Embassy in Washington, D.C., after her Greek postage stamp and envelope design caught the eye of Greece’s U.S. ambassador, Ekaterini Nassika.
