BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell University has always been more than just a place to earn a degree for Bob Barker (’65). Instead, Bob sees it as the foundation of his personal and professional success. A longtime Campbell supporter and trustee, Bob has devoted several decades of service and generosity to the institution that helped shape his life.

Raised with a deep appreciation for hard work, Bob remembers how challenging it can be for families of average means to afford higher education. Its very difficult for average income families these days to really afford to come to university,” he shared. If they dont have some kind of help, usually they have to look elsewhere for their education.” His commitment to Campbell has always centered on making sure future students have the resources and opportunities to pursue careers.

Over the years, Bob has taken leadership roles in some of the universitys most transformational initiatives. In the early 2000s, he chaired the campaign to build the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center, an effort that ultimately raised $34 million in just 24 months, exceeding expectations and setting new records for Campbell fundraising. He later chaired campaigns that established Campbells football program and Barker-Lane Stadium, even in the midst of the 2008 recession. One of his proudest achievements came when he served as chair of the committee to build the Oscar N. Harris Student Union, a project that raised over $100 million and created a vibrant hub for student life in Buies Creek.

All of these projects are not about recognition for Bob, but instead are about ensuring that Campbell thrives for generations to come. It helps to grow the university. It helps to provide more opportunities for students,” he said. The best part is seeing people step forward out of love for Campbell, its very satisfying.”

Looking back, Bob credits his alma mater as the launching point for his career in correctional supplies. I would never have been in this business if I had not gone to Campbell,” he reflected.

While he is quick to deflect the word legacy”, Bob hopes his giving inspires others to step forward. To make a successful university, it has to come from outside help,” he shared. We want students to see that alumni give back because Campbell positioned us to succeed. We want them to have the same opportunities we did.”
