Campbell to transition from Zoom to Microsoft Teams for online meetings

Campbell University Information Technology announced a change regarding the University’s videoconferencing tools this month. After a careful review of minimizing duplication of services along with rising technology costs across campus, Campbell will be fully transitioning from Zoom to Microsoft Teams this summer as the University’s supported videoconferencing platform.

“We understand that this is a significant change which may present challenges for many of our academic programs and administrative areas,” Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer Sherri Yerk-Zwickl shared in a written announcement in January. “Unfortunately, the rapid escalation of Zoom’s licensing fees has made it financially unsustainable for the University to continue our contract with Zoom. Please know that Campbell is not alone in this challenge, as many other institutions across higher education are facing the same cost increases and making similar decisions.”

Yerk-Zwickl said Microsoft Teams is included as part of Campbell’s existing Microsoft 365 license at no additional cost to the University community.

“Consolidating our videoconferencing needs within Teams allows us to be better stewards of university resources while still providing a secure, modern collaboration platform for teaching, learning and administrative work,” she said.

Over the coming months, Information Technology will work closely with individual schools, colleges and departments to understand their specific use cases and to identify any specialized functionality needed during this transition. To support faculty and staff through this change, Academic Technology will be offering hands‑on Microsoft Teams workshops, targeted training sessions, and departmental consultations. These sessions will cover everything from basic Teams meeting management to the advanced features that replicate existing Zoom workflows. Our goal is to ensure all areas have the knowledge and confidence needed to transition smoothly.

“Because preparing for this shift will take time, we are sharing this information early to help departments plan and to give us enough time to deliver comprehensive training resources ahead of the change,” Yerk-Zwickl said. “If your area relies on specific features in Zoom or has unique workflow requirements, please let us know. Understanding your needs will help us research solutions within Teams and deliver tailored training that supports your daily work.”
