Campbell Law School’s student group Law Students Advocating for Survivors (LSAS) is turning compassion into action this spring with an event designed to bring the legal community and the public together in solidarity with survivors of domestic and sexual violence, organizers say.

LSAS will host a “Walk in Their Shoes” event beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the Thomas G. Crowder Woodland Center at Lake Johnson in Raleigh. The event, which is scheduled to end at noon, combines community engagement with a meaningful cause, raising both awareness and funds for InterAct, a Wake County nonprofit dedicated to serving victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence and supporting their families, members of the LSAS Executive Board say.

LSAS brings together members of Law Students Against Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, who are hosting the “Walk in Their Shoes” event during April to deepen that mission. The walk symbolizes stepping into the experiences of survivors —h onoring their resilience, confronting the reality of harm and inspiring empathy and action.

The morning will open with a survivor-to-advocate talk from LaTonya Allen, whose story is expected to offer a powerful and personal look at the journey from surviving to advocating. Attendees will then take part in a community walk and run around Lake Johnson, a symbolic and physical act of standing alongside survivors. Fundraising activities, including a raffle and direct donation opportunities, will also be available throughout the event.

InterAct has long been a cornerstone of support for survivors in the Wake County community, and LSAS members hope the event will shine a spotlight on the critical work the organization does while generating meaningful financial support.

Members of the LSAS Executive Board are encouraging broad participation from the Campbell Law community, local organizations and anyone who wants to make a difference. There are multiple ways to get involved, including attending the event, donating, volunteering, supporting the raffle or simply help spreading the word. Those interested in contributing an item to the raffle table are invited to reach out directly via LinkedIn or email Madison Weyker at m_weyker1220@email.campbell.edu.

The event is being held during Sexual Assault Awareness Month because it brings focused attention to an issue that is often hidden in silence, the website states. It creates space for survivors to be heard, communities to learn and institutions to be held accountable. By raising awareness, promoting prevention and supporting those affected, it helps shift cultural norms toward respect, safety and consent — and reminds us that ending sexual violence requires collective effort all year long.
