Lawyers Mutual Senior Claims Counsel Mark Scruggs ’86 has been selected by the North Carolina State Bar as a recipient of The John B. McMillan Distinguished Service Award.

The award program honors current and retired members of the North Carolina State Bar throughout the state who have demonstrated exemplary service to the legal profession. Members of the Bar are encouraged to nominate colleagues who have demonstrated outstanding service to the profession.

Scruggs was nominated by fellow Lawyers Mutual Senior Claims Counsel, Warren Savage. Savage has worked alongside Scruggs for 14 years as a member of the claims team.

“It’s hard to imagine a lawyer more dedicated to the betterment of our profession than Mark Scruggs,” Savage said in a press release. “Mark has served our state’s lawyers as a mentor, a CLE teacher of ethics and best practices, a leader in North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA) and State Bar committees, a counselor for aggrieved lawyers in difficult times and a boundless source of comfort, legal wisdom and practical advice for any lawyer with a question or concern. In short, Mark’s career has been dedicated to his missions of helping lawyers help their clients and better themselves. I’m so happy the State Bar is recognizing him with its highest honor.”

The John B. McMillan Distinguished Service Award was presented by N.C. State Bar President Colon Willoughby of McGuire Woods, during a special luncheon hosted by the 10th Judicial District of the N.C. State Bar and the Wake County Bar Association on Dec. 3, 2019.

Scruggs joined Lawyers Mutual in March 2001 as Claims Counsel. In May 2018, he became Senior Claims Counsel.

Formerly a partner with Spear, Barnes, Baker, Wainio & Scruggs, LLP in Durham, Scruggs has more than 14 years’ experience as a trial attorney concentrating in insurance defense litigation. For the past 18 years, he has worked with Lawyers Mutual primarily in litigation-related claims and workers compensation and family law matters.

Scruggs is a 1986 cum laude graduate of Campbell University School of Law. He is a past chair of the Law Practice Management section of the NCBA. He has served as an Advisory Member of the State Bar Ethics Committee and the Authorized Practice Committee of the North Carolina State Bar. He also served as co-chair of the NCBA’s “Transitioning Lawyers Commission” working to address issues facing aging lawyers.
