Campbell Law 45th Anniversary Alumni Spotlight: Scott Flowers ’03
Nominee: Scott Flowers, Class of 2003
Scott Flowers ’03 is the supervising partner for Litigation with Hutchens Law Firm practicing in the areas of construction, land use, housing and business law and litigation. An AV-Rated Attorney, Flowers regularly represents general contractors, property management companies, landowners, business professionals and real estate agents before state and federal courts throughout North Carolina, as well as licensing boards and government agencies. Flowers earned his undergraduate degree from East Carolina University. Flowers is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association, Cumberland County Bar Association and Old Kivett Advocacy Council. He also serves on the United Way of Cumberland County’s Board of Directors. Flowers was selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America – Commercial Litigation (2021), North Carolina “Super Lawyers” (2020), and Business NC Legal Elite – Litigation (2017-2019).
Nominator: Reagan Warren, Class of 2020
A Dunn native, Warren is a 2020 graduate of Campbell Law School. Following graduation and passing the bar exam, Warren returned to the law school to serve as the 2020-21 Wallace Leadership Fellow. In this role, she assists Dean J. Rich Leonard with development initiatives and works closely with the law school’s senior staff in the areas of alumni relations, career services and marketing. Warren earned her undergraduate degree from East Carolina University.
How does your nominee embody your definition of leading with purpose?
To me, leading with purpose is a way of life, rather than something you turn on and off. It means leading in small, everyday ways that you can’t put on your resume. Purposeful leadership is guided by something bigger than oneself.
I nominated Scott Flowers because he embodies these qualities. At the time I met Scott, I was a law student contemplating whether I wanted to pursue a traditional career in law. I didn’t mention this to Scott, but I was certainly hoping that my summer experience working under his supervision would help me determine the direction I wanted to go next. Luckily, Scott took every opportunity he had that summer to help me understand what “lawyering” truly is. When a mediation wasn’t making progress in the office, he relocated the mediation to the site of the matter at hand and brought me along to teach me how this approach could help both parties find common ground. When I told Scott that property issues felt abstract and daunting to me, he tasked me with a grueling title search that ultimately answered a complex easement question. He did this knowing that there were paralegals who would be more efficient at this type of task because he realized the opportunity he had to help me understand the practical and human element of what can sometimes feel like an abstract legal issue. Scott goes above and beyond in his everyday leadership and in his mentorship of young attorneys and law students. Needless to say, after my experience that summer, I left having decided to pursue a career as an attorney. Scott later introduced me to the court at my swearing-in ceremony.
