Gartner and Shenk Recognized as KEEN Faculty Fellows

Dr. Jacqueline Gartner and Dr. Tim Shenk have been recognized as KEEN Faculty Fellows. We are particularly honored to have two fellows here at Campbell, given that KEEN only awards 27 such fellowships nationwide. The fellowships recognize leadership in undergraduate engineering education. Each award comes with a $10,000 grant to be used to support efforts to innovate in the classroom. Check out the press release here for more information.

Inaugural ABET Visit Scheduled

Campbell School of Engineering will have our inaugural (virtual) ABET accreditation visit October 10-12. We submitted our self study report and transcripts of graduates this summer. We have also been working to video our labs and gather documentation of student work and assessment activities in advance of the virtual visit. We have requested that our accreditation be retroactive back to fall 2019 so that all of our alumni will be covered. The ABET team will talk with our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and external advisory board members, as well as learn about our school and its activities. Our accreditation decision will be made in summer 2022.

National Leaders

We are so pleased that Dr. Michele Miller, Dr. Teresa Ratcliff and Dr. Jenna Carpenter are all holding national leadership positions this year. Dr. Miller is the Chair of the American Society for Mechanical Engineering (ASME) Committee on Engineering Education this year. The Committee works to engage in outreach and advocacy around engineering education for mechanical engineering. Dr. Teresa Ratcliff, Director of Interprofessional Education and Outreach AND Professor of the Practice, is serving on the Engineering Education Committee for the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (NCEES). NCEES oversees engineering licensure (including administering the FE and PE exams) in the US. Dr. Carpenter is the President-Elect of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) this year. She will serve as ASEE President next year and ASEE Past President the year after. ASEE is the premier organization focused on advancing innovation, excellence and access to engineering education at all levels.

School Update

It seems hard to believe, but we have welcomed our sixth class of Campbell Engineering majors this fall! Fifty-five strong, this entering class is already off to a great start. This year’s senior class is our largest to date, at forty-four students. Our NASA Human Rover Exploration Challenge Team is already working toward next April’s competition, following their outstanding performance this past year where they earned both the Ingenuity Award for innovative design and the Project Review Award for documentation and presentations. We are working toward establishing both a National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) student chapter and a Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) student chapter. We have welcomed two new lab managers this year. Zachary Giles is our new Engineering Lab Manager, replacing Steve Hasselberg who retired in August 2020, and Chad Strickland is our new Fab Lab Manager.
