Devotion for September 28, 2021

Hebrews 1:1-4
Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds.

He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

“Our problem following Jesus is we’re trying to be a better version of us, rather than a more accurate reflection of Him.” These words from Bob Goff rang in my head immediately as I read this passage. We make a mistake so often of trying to improve our selves, when as followers of Christ, we are meant to be imitators of Christ. As we step into that space, of living lives worthy of being called imitators of Christ, then and only then, do we find wholeness in being who God created us to be.

When we follow Jesus fully, we reflect God’s glory, not our best self. We strive to demonstrate the imprint of God’s very being in our words, actions, and thoughts. Being our best selves may become a biproduct, but the goal is to be like Jesus to each person we encounter.
