Campbell Law finishes as championship finalists at 2022 Regional ABA Client Counseling Competition

Over the weekend, Campbell Law School second-year students Adia McLaughlin and Genesis Torres competed as advocates in the 2022 Regional American Bar Association (ABA) Client Counseling Competition. The team of McLaughlin and Torres finished as Championship Finalists in the annual competition. In Torres and McLaughlin’s first appearance as client counselors, they emerged as one of the top teams with an undefeated record of 3-0 after the preliminary rounds.

The ABA Client Counseling Competition emphasizes the importance of preventative law and the need to be an effective counselor. The competition measures the ability to deal with a client’s non-legal alternatives as well as their legal concerns. Students must probe the client for relevant details while putting the client at ease. To be successful, teams must analyze the law as applied to the client’s issue and provide a plan of action.

This year the Campbell Law Client Counseling Team consisted of third-year students Miriam Sheppard and Tabitha Cooke, and second-year students Trynity Ojeda, Jonathan Wright and Ashton Makey, in addition to McLaughlin and Torres. The team was coached by alumni Zack Anstett ‘18 and Skylar Gallagher ‘19.
