Devotion for June 7, 2022

John 16:12-15
“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason, I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

As a kid I used to love activity books that used a special pen to uncover hidden messages. The games challenged me to think more about what I was seeing and reading before uncovering the answers. In truth, the answers were always there, all I had to do was uncover them. I wonder if we approach scripture and the will of God the same way. Assuming that the answers are easily accessible, thus causing us to skip ahead to uncovering the answers, or assuming we already know them, rather than wrestling with them.

The scriptures and teachings of Jesus are still being uncovered for us, discerned by willing spirits. These very words of Jesus indicate that the Spirit is still teaching his followers. Are we to assume that has stopped? All too regularly I meet people who act as if all the world’s mysteries and God’s doctrines have been uncovered. I suspect if we live with expectant eyes we might see more of what God is still teaching us about truth.
