Beyond the prescription: Dr. Ahunna Freeman expands community care
For Ahunna Freeman (’09 PharmD), community pharmacy offers opportunities to connect patients with care beyond filling prescriptions. In recognition of American Pharmacists Month this October, Campbell University’s College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences celebrates her work to expand those opportunities.
Freeman is co-founder and pharmacist-in-charge of Southside Discount Pharmacy in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Established in 2014, the pharmacy provides clinical services in an accessible community setting.
“We deliver accessible, outside-the-box healthcare solutions beyond traditional dispensing,” Freeman said.
Services include flu and COVID-19 testing and treatment, hormonal contraceptive consultations and prescribing, and administration of non-vaccine long-acting injectable medications. The pharmacy also offers specialized medication packaging, chronic disease management and customized non-sterile compounding.
Freeman extends her reach through Aligned Care LLC, which she founded in 2017 and serves as president. She provides outpatient medication consulting to patients and prescribers, delivers continuing education for healthcare organizations, and guest-lectures to student pharmacists and advanced practice provider trainees. Her work also emphasizes lifestyle medicine and preventive wellness.
Throughout her career, Freeman has drawn on the clinical foundation she developed at Campbell.
“I remain deeply grateful for the clinical foundation Campbell provided, which continues to fuel my dedication to advancing the profession and serving our communities for decades to come,” she said.
Her work reflects the impact celebrated during American Pharmacists Month: pharmacists applying their expertise to meet patients’ needs, educate future practitioners and strengthen community care.
