Future Physical Therapist: Kristyn Van Cleave

Undergraduate Experience: California State University Bakersfield – Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology 2019

What do you bring to the Campbell classroom?
I have accomplished a lot in my 19 years of life. I am the published author of the Dreambreath trilogy, a 3-book fantasy series. I enjoy performing in local community theatre productions in my hometown of Bakersfield, CA (highlights include Kate in Legally Blonde, featured dancer in Spring Awakening, and Bebe in A Chorus Line). I am also a choreographer for North of the River Junior Theatre, a local junior theatre company.

I am a huge advocate for mental health, having gone through a personal diagnosis/disability while pursuing my education. This gives me the understanding and compassion needed to work with patients who are dealing with mental illnesses or any psychological symptoms caused by their condition.

What do you hope to accomplish at Campbell CPHS?
Dealing with a difficult mental condition has certainly made obtaining my education more difficult. I have persevered, and I plan on continuing to do so throughout my DPT program. I cannot wait to continue my education and obtain the degree I have always dreamed of!

Why did you choose Campbell University?
I chose Campbell because the faith-based campus implies values that I believe should be central to healthcare.

I’m excited about the trees! I fell in love with the area when I came to interview. It’s so different from California!

What are your career goals ?
I hope to work in a rehabilitation hospital. I want to be an advocate for positivity in my patients’ lives.  Studies have shown positive attitudes correlate with functional recovery outcomes. Any difficult situation can be overcome with the right attitude!
