Campbell Law Dean J. Rich Leonard has announced the Law Offices of John M. McCabe is financially sponsoring a team of Campbell Law student advocates who are competing in the American Bar Association (ABA) Negotiation Competition scheduled for Nov. 8-10, 2019, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Campbell Law is sending two teams to the competition this year that will focus on the topic of Family Law. The teams are coached by Andrew Shores ’13 and Evin Grant ’16. Shores, who was a National Trial Team competitor in law school, is a Senior Associate at Williams Mullen, where he specializes in IP Law. Grant, who was heavily involved in the advocacy program during law school and served as the Wallace Leadership Fellow, is the director of Student Life and Pro Bono Opportunities at Campbell Law. The two teams are comprised of third-year students Chamberlain Collier and Justin Hill and second-year students Benjamin Aydlett and Thomas Harvey.

The ABA Law Student Division Negotiation Competition is designed to promote interest among law students in legal negotiations.  This competition provides a forum for students to improve their negotiating skills through simulations of a series of legal problems.  The simulations include a common set of facts for all students to work from as well as confidential information known only to the students representing a particular side of the negotiation.  As students advance in the competition, the negotiation situation varies at each round, meaning no two negotiations are the same. Students must negotiate under time constraints and in an area of law they may be unfamiliar with.  This competition promotes the development of the student’s communication skills and an ability to quickly assess the needs and interests of their client and adversary.
