School of Engineering Alumni Newsletter | Spring 2022

Welcome to our 2nd Campbell School of Engineering Alumni Newsletter! Our goal with this twice-yearly newsletter is to keep you abreast of important Campbell Engineering news, to let you know about Engineering alumni events, and to share opportunities you have to help mentor our Campbell engineering majors. We’d also love to hear from you! Please share your news and accomplishments with us, as well. And if you know of a Campbell alumnus who isn’t getting our newsletter, have them reach out and give us their email address!

News and Updates

Carpenter Receives NAE Gordon Prize

Dr. Jenna Carpenter was named as a recipient of the prestigious National Academy of Engineering (NAE) Bernard M. Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education. The $500,000 prize was awarded to Carpenter, along with Drs. Yannis Yortsos, Rick Miller, and Tom Katsouleas, for their work to establish and build the NAE Grand Challenges Scholars Program. They will be honored in May at a gala at the University of Southern California. Check out the press release here for more information.

ABET Update

Campbell School of Engineering had our inaugural (virtual) ABET accreditation visit in October 2021. Thanks to those of you who participated in our visit as alumni! We were pleased that our Exit Statement contained no shortcomings and two strengths: (1) our remarkably strong ties and interaction with industry and responsiveness to regional industry needs; and 2) our hands-on approach to engineering education that exposes our students to an outstanding array of equipment & facilities, as well as exposes them to real-world problems which equip our students beyond the level typically expected of engineering graduates. We will receive our official notification from ABET in August 2022.

Engineering Days and Camps

We are hosting our popular Engineering Days on campus each semester to provide K12 students a chance to participate in Campbell’s brand of hands-on, team-based, engineering projects with two of our Engineering Days for Spring Semester already over capacity! We will also host our STEM Camp in-person this summer, with one new addition: an Engineering Camp for Girls Only, Grades 10 – 12, from June 20-23. Please help us spread the word about all of these great opportunities to the students in your corner of the world!

School Update

It seems hard to believe, but we will graduate our third class of Campbell Engineering majors this May! This graduating class is our largest to date, at forty-four students. We are again hosting the North Carolina FIRST Robotics State Championship at Campbell on April 8 – 10. Our NASA Human Rover Exploration Challenge Team is looking forward to this year’s (virtual) competition in April, following their outstanding performance this past year where they earned both the Ingenuity Award for innovative design and the Project Review Award for documentation and presentations.
